Conservation and restoration work on the Caritas sculpture.

The marble sculpture Caritas, created by sculptor Caspar Clemens Zumbusch (1830–1915), is one of several park sculptures harmoniously integrated into the island landscape. The sculpture, created at the beginning of the 20th century, depicts a mother with children in her arms and symbolizes love. In its immediate vicinity is another marble sculpture by the same artist, Labour, depicting a worker, a blacksmith. These two works personify Kupelwieser (1843–1919), the former owner of the Brijuni Islands, as a man of exceptional work ethic and great love, who, thanks to these qualities, managed to transform the malaria-ridden and neglected Brijuni into a top-tier tourist destination and a health oasis.

Located near the Church of St. German, the sculpture of a mother with children enhances this park space. However, due to exposure to the elements, over time, it became covered with layers of green and black algae, as well as lichen and moss. In order to restore the recognizable shine and whiteness of the Carrara marble, conservation and restoration work was necessary. In late August and early September of 2024, restoration was carried out under the leadership of licensed conservator-restorer Osanna Šašinka, allowing us to once again fully experience this artwork.
