Zebra Day 2025

Zebras are ungulates belonging to the family Equidae, which also includes horses and donkeys. These unique animals originate from Africa and are recognizable by their black-and-white stripes. Although all zebras look similar at first glance, each individual has a unique stripe pattern, comparable to fingerprints in humans.

Genetic Relations and Zebra Hybrids
Zebras are closely related to horses and donkeys, sharing a common ancestor that lived 4 to 4.5 million years ago. However, due to their strong temperament and specific biology, zebras are not as easily domesticated as their relatives. Genetic analyses reveal that zebras are more closely related to donkeys than to horses.

Zebra hybrids, known as zebroids, are the result of crossing zebras with horses, donkeys, or ponies.

The Role of Zebras in Ecosystems and Conservation
Zebras play a key role in preserving the biodiversity of African savannas. Their grazing promotes plant growth and creates habitats for other species. However, due to poaching and habitat destruction, some zebra species face significant threats and are classified as endangered.

Zebras and Their Role in Zoos
Despite their genetic connection to horses and donkeys, zebras behave much more like wild animals. Zoos provide a safe environment for these fascinating creatures, especially endangered species like the Grévy's zebra. In addition to protecting them, zoos educate the public about the importance of preserving natural habitats and promote global breeding programs to prevent the species' extinction.
