The Brijuni National Park is taking part in the “Plastic Free Zone” programme, co-financed by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, aimed at national parks and nature parks actively participating in the fight against one of the biggest challenges of today.
The problem of plastic waste surfaced a few years ago. Mass production of plastic waste began in the 1950s. Plastic as a material owes its popularity to its extremely broad application and a low cost of production and processing. Following a long period of using paper, which brought about the problem of deforestation and an excessive use of natural resources due to the unregulated resource exploitation, humans found a new convenient material – plastic. The forests managed to catch a break, but what happened in the meantime?!
Europe ranks second in the world when it comes to the production of plastics. According to the latest research, as much as 70-80% of generated waste ends up in the marine environment, and it is estimated that as many as 300 million tons of plastic waste are floating around in the world’s seas.
Plastic has cornered the market: packaging – bottles, containers, foils, bags, nets; clothing, footwear, upholstery; cosmetics – peelings, creams, etc. Have you noticed that most of the products you use in your everyday life contain plastic? Have you noticed that when sorting waste, you usually sort plastic?
Our goal is to reduce the use of single-use plastic products and to remove plastic waste from protected natural areas in an effort to preserve natural ecosystems. Help us to achieve our goal because even the smallest contribution matters!
What we have done so far to achieve a plastic-free island:
- we stopped using single-use plastic consumables (e.g. straws, cups)
- we set up recycling bins in several locations inside the hotel and on the islands
- we are introducing hotel accessories made with compostable materials
- at our bars and in the hotel mini-bar, we exclusively offer drinks in glass containers
What you can do to achieve a plastic-free island:
- use reusable food and beverage packaging
- dispose of plastic in the dedicated recycling bins located inside the hotel and installed in several locations on the island
- share this important message with your loved ones, lead by example
- feel free to use our glass bottle during your stay, as the tap water on the Brijuni Islands is potable
Thank you for helping us look after the environment!
